White Coat Syndrome?

My doctor says I'm the poster child for white coat syndrome. You know, when your blood pressure rises as soon as you see anyone in medical uniforms. He claims (I think he's joking) that he can see my blood pressure rise as soon as I see the blood pressure cuff. Anyone have a similar problem?

I am 66 years old and I have had white coat syndrome since I was a teen ager. I had a terrible time getting into the Army. Every time I go for a check up the doctors look at me like I'm going to blow up. My blood pressure spikes to 190/100. I have had a commercial drivers license and have to go for an anual physical, which I never pass on the first try. Some times I have to show that I am on some kind of medication before they will sign my DOT card. Over the years I have had doctors wanting to do everything from putting me on BP meds to going to counseling. Nothing works. When I check my own BP at home it's normal. I have accepted the fact that I'm one of the 10% and now when I go to a doctor that doesn't know me I tell him right up front that I have WCS and let him deal with it.

Hi Jolie,

I've suffered from this ever since I first had my blood pressure taken. I find that if I mention it then there is no concern as long as I'm lower than 140/90 or so.
